Robots.txt File Generator

A robots.txt file is a text file that tells search engine crawlers which pages or sections of your website they can or cannot access. It's essential for controlling how search engines index your site, protecting private areas, managing crawl budget, and preventing duplicate content issues. Every website should have one to guide search engines effectively.

Simply enter your sitemap URL, select the search engine crawlers you want to configure, optionally add directories to block (like /admin/ or /private/), and set a crawl delay if needed. Click "Generate Robots.txt" and the tool will create a properly formatted file instantly. You can then copy it to your clipboard or download it as a .txt file to upload to your website.

For most websites, you should allow major search engines like Googlebot (Google), Bingbot (Microsoft Bing), and DuckDuckBot (DuckDuckGo). If you have image-heavy content, include Googlebot-Image. For news sites, add Googlebot-News. International sites targeting specific regions should include crawlers like Baiduspider (China) or YandexBot (Russia). Common directories to disallow include /admin/, /wp-admin/ (WordPress), /private/, /temp/, /cgi-bin/, /cart/, /checkout/, and /account/. These typically contain sensitive information, duplicate content, or pages that shouldn't be indexed. However, be careful not to accidentally block important content pages. Only disallow directories that you genuinely don't want search engines to crawl and index.

In most cases, you don't need a crawl-delay. Search engines are already efficient at crawling without overloading servers. Only set a crawl-delay (measured in seconds between requests) if your server struggles with crawler traffic or you have specific technical reasons. Note that Google ignores crawl-delay directives, and setting it too high can slow down indexing of your content, potentially hurting your SEO.

Upload the robots.txt file to the root directory of your website. It must be accessible at yourdomain.com/robots.txt (not in a subdirectory). Use FTP, your hosting control panel, or your CMS's file manager to upload it. After uploading, verify it works by visiting yoursite.com/robots.txt in a browser. You can also test it using Google Search Console's robots.txt Tester tool to ensure proper configuration.
