llms.txt Generator and Checker: A map of your site for AI tools, built from your sitemap

llms.txt is a Markdown file that gives AI tools a short map of your site. Google says Google Search ignores it, and most AI bots don't read it yet, so treat it as cheap and optional.

About this llms.txt generator and checker

This free llms.txt generator reads your homepage and sitemap, groups your pages into sections and gives you a file you can edit line by line, then copy or download. It uses no AI and needs no sign-up. The llms.txt checker reads any site's live file, or one you paste, and reports problems against the format published at llmstxt.org: a missing H1, a missing summary, malformed links, relative URLs, empty sections and more. It also samples a few links and looks for an llms-full.txt. Below the tool you'll find real llms.txt examples from sites like Stripe, Cloudflare and Shopify, measured today.

We also state plainly what's known about llms.txt: Google says Google Search ignores it, and studies have found few AI bots reading it. It's cheap to add and can help coding agents, but it's not a way to get cited.

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a Markdown file at the root of a website that gives AI tools a short map of the site: what it is and which pages matter. It's a proposal, published at llmstxt.org, and not an official web standard.

It's different from robots.txt. robots.txt tells crawlers what they may fetch. llms.txt suggests what's worth reading, and it blocks nothing.

Does llms.txt actually work?

For Google and AI search, there's no evidence that it helps. Google says it ignores the file, and two large studies found almost no AI bots reading it and no link to citations. We make this tool, and we still wouldn't tell you it will get you cited.

Where it can help: coding agents and developer tools that are already working with your product. Ahrefs found Claude-Code among the top readers, and Stripe's file opens with instructions for coding agents. Google also says it's fine to keep one for other systems that use these files.

It takes a few minutes with this tool, so it's a cheap thing to try. Just don't expect it to move your traffic. To actually show up in AI answers, what counts is being cited on the pages AI tools read. See how to get mentioned by AI assistants and how to become a source AI tools cite.

The llms.txt format

# Acme

> Acme makes outdoor gear for trail runners and hikers.

We ship to the US and Canada. Prices are in US dollars.

## Docs

- [Size guide](https://acme.com/sizes.md): How to pick a shoe size
- [Returns](https://acme.com/returns.md): The 30-day return policy

## Optional

- [Company history](https://acme.com/about.md)
# Name
Required. An H1 with the name of the site. It's the only part the spec requires.
> Summary
A blockquote right after the H1, with what a reader needs to make sense of the rest.
Details
Optional paragraphs or lists, without headings, on how to read the file.
## Sections
Optional H2 sections, each a list of links in the form - [name](url): notes.
## Optional
A section by convention, for links an agent can skip when it needs less context.

The spec also suggests clean Markdown versions of your pages, at the same URL plus .md. That's optional, and normal page URLs work in the links. Some sites also publish an llms-full.txt with all their content in one file. That's a common habit, not a part of the spec.

Real llms.txt examples

We fetched each file below on October 31, 2026 and measured it with this tool. Most have warnings: even large sites bend the format, usually with prose inside link sections.

SiteSizeLinksSectionsWhat to learn from it
Outrank23 KB10110Our own file. A marketing site: pricing, product pages, comparisons and guides.
Stripe Docs95 KB46727Large docs index, with instructions for coding agents at the top.
Cloudflare Developers16 KB1129A short index where each product links to its own llms.txt.
Vercel5 KB289Compact, and written around when an agent should use the product.
Shopify12 KB7112A company site grouped by what merchants want to do.
HubSpot35 KB22529A broad map of products and hubs for a big marketing site.
Zapier12 KB248A root map that points agents to per-surface indexes.
Supabase3 KB424Very short, and it points to an llms-full.txt with the whole documentation.

Links counts only list items in the [name](url) form inside H2 sections. These files change often, so the Check tab reads the live version.

How to add llms.txt to your site

  1. 1. Generate and edit. Cut it down to the pages that answer real questions, and rewrite any names that read badly.
  2. 2. Upload it to the root. It must open at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. On a static host, put it with your other public files. On WordPress, upload it to the site root by FTP or use a plugin. Some website builders can generate one for you.
  3. 3. Check it. Run your domain through the Check tab, and make sure it returns text and not your 404 page.
  4. 4. Check AI crawlers can get in. llms.txt doesn't override robots.txt. Use the robots.txt checker to see whether GPTBot, ClaudeBot and others are allowed.

Frequently asked questions

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a Markdown file at the root of a website that gives AI tools a short map of the site: what it is and which pages matter. It's a proposal from llmstxt.org, not an official web standard.

Does Google use llms.txt?

No. Google's guide on generative AI search says Google Search ignores these files, and that having one will neither harm nor help your visibility or rankings in Google Search.

Do AI crawlers read llms.txt?

Rarely. Ahrefs studied 137,000 domains and found that 97% of valid files got no requests at all in May 2026. GPTBot and Claude-Code were the top AI readers of the few that did.

Will llms.txt get me cited in ChatGPT?

There's no evidence that it will. SE Ranking looked at about 300,000 domains and found no link between having the file and being cited in AI answers. Being cited on pages that AI tools read matters far more.

Should I add llms.txt to my site?

It's cheap and harmless, so add it if you run docs or a developer product, where coding agents may use it. For a typical marketing site, treat it as optional and don't expect it to change your traffic.

What is the difference between llms.txt and robots.txt?

robots.txt tells crawlers what they may fetch. llms.txt suggests what's worth reading and blocks nothing, so it doesn't override robots.txt.

Where do I put my llms.txt file?

At the root of your site, so it opens at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. The spec also allows subfolders, like /docs/llms.txt, for files that cover only that part of the site.

Why are some of my pages missing from the draft?

We start with at most 60 links, up to 12 per section, and skip tags, logins, carts and foreign-language copies, since llms.txt should point to what matters. You can add any page by hand.
