About this schema markup generator and validator

This free schema markup generator builds JSON-LD for Article, FAQ, Product, Local business, Organization, Breadcrumb, How-to, Event, Review and Software app pages. Each type opens with an example, and the code, a Google result preview and a check against Google's rules update as you type.

The schema markup validator works on any JSON-LD you paste, on the HTML of a page, or on a live URL. It works as a schema checker for errors like broken JSON, missing required properties, bad dates and prices with currency symbols, and it lists the Google rich results the markup could qualify for.

The rules come from Google's current structured data docs, including what has changed: FAQ and How-to markup no longer earn rich results, and the tool says so. Validation runs in your browser, with no sign-up.

What is schema markup?

Schema markup is code that tells search engines what a page is about, in a fixed vocabulary from schema.org. Most sites write it as JSON-LD: a small script block that visitors never see.

Valid markup can make a page eligible for rich results, like review stars or a product price. It doesn't guarantee them, and Google says the markup must match what's visible on the page.

Which schema types still earn rich results?

Eight of the ten types in this generator still have a Google rich result or search feature. FAQ and How-to don't, and many older guides still say they do.

TypeIn Google todayRequired by Google
ArticleBetter title, image and date in results.None. Google recommends headline, image, author and dates.
BreadcrumbGoogle says breadcrumbs now show on desktop results only.itemListElement with 2 or more items, each with name, position and item (last item may skip item).
EventIn-person events with a set time and place.name, startDate, location with address.
Local businessHours, ratings and actions in the knowledge panel.name, address.
OrganizationLogo, contact details and identifiers.None. Google recommends name, url, logo and more.
ProductPrice, availability and review stars.name, plus one of offers, review or aggregateRating.
Review snippetStars on books, recipes, movies, products, apps and businesses.author, itemReviewed with name, reviewRating with ratingValue.
Software appRating, price and app details.name, offers.price, plus aggregateRating or review.
FAQGoogle stopped showing it on May 7, 2026, and removed the docs on June 15, 2026.No rich result to qualify for.
How-toRemoved from mobile in August 2023 and from desktop on September 13, 2023.No rich result to qualify for.

Should you remove FAQ schema now?

There's no rush. FAQ markup no longer changes how you look in Google, but it does no harm. Google limited FAQ rich results to government and health sites in 2023, then removed them for everyone in May 2026.

Keep it if your CMS adds it for free. Don't spend new time on it for Google. This generator still builds FAQ and How-to markup, since other tools can read them, and it tells you plainly that no rich result comes with it.

How to add JSON-LD to your site

  1. Custom site: paste the script block anywhere in the page's head or body.
  2. WordPress: most SEO plugins add markup for you. For anything extra, use a Custom HTML block or a header scripts plugin.
  3. Wix: follow our step-by-step guide to schema markup on Wix.
  4. Shopify and other platforms: themes often add Product markup already. Check a live product page in the Validate tab before adding more, so you don't create two competing blocks.

After publishing, run the URL through the Validate tab, then through Google's Rich Results Test. To check titles, descriptions and social tags on the same page, use the website metadata checker.

Frequently asked questions

What is schema markup?

Schema markup is code that tells search engines what a page is about, using the schema.org vocabulary. Most sites write it as a JSON-LD script block. Valid markup can make a page eligible for rich results, like review stars or a product price.

Does FAQ schema still work?

Not for rich results in Google. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026, and removed the documentation on June 15, 2026. The markup does no harm and other tools can read it, but it won't change how you look in Google.

Does How-to schema still work?

Not in Google. How-to rich results were removed from mobile in August 2023 and from desktop on September 13, 2023. The generator still builds the markup, and tells you no rich result comes with it.

How do I check if my schema markup is valid?

Switch to Validate, then paste your JSON-LD or enter a URL. You get JSON errors with the line number, missing required properties, recommended ones, and which Google rich results it could qualify for. Then confirm with Google's Rich Results Test.

What is the difference between this and Google's Rich Results Test?

Google's test renders the page and shows what Google can read, but only for rich results it still supports. This tool also explains JSON errors in plain English, covers retired types and needs no rendering. It reads the HTML as served, so it can miss markup added by JavaScript.

Does schema markup improve rankings?

Google doesn't describe schema as a direct ranking boost. It helps Google understand the page and can make it eligible for rich results, which can earn more clicks. Google also says no special schema is needed for its AI features.

Which schema types does the validator check?

Article, Product and merchant listing, Local business, Organization, Breadcrumb, Event, Review, Aggregate rating, Software app, Recipe, Video and Job posting, against Google's required and recommended properties. FAQ and How-to get a structure check and a note that Google retired their rich results.

Why does the URL check find no schema on my page?

We read the HTML as the server sends it, without running JavaScript. If your site adds JSON-LD with JavaScript, it won't show here, though Google can often still see it. Use Google's Rich Results Test to check the rendered page.
