Free Favicon Checker: Test and download any site's favicon

Enter any site. You'll see if Google can show its favicon, every size it has, and a download button for each file:

Favicon size guide

The right favicon size depends on where it shows. Google Search needs a square icon of at least 48×48 pixels, browsers use 16 and 32 pixel versions, and phones use 180 to 512 pixel icons on the home screen. These are the sizes to ship:

About this favicon checker

This free favicon checker tests the small icon that sits next to your site in Google, browser tabs and bookmarks. Enter a domain and it reads the home page, finds every favicon, Apple touch icon and web app manifest icon, and opens each file to measure its real size and format.

The favicon checker then scores it against Google's favicon rules: a favicon tag on the home page, a square image of at least 48x48 pixels, a file that loads, and robots.txt access for Googlebot. You see the right favicon size for every spot, from a 16 pixel tab icon to a 512 pixel app icon, plus the exact code to fix what is missing.

It doubles as a favicon downloader and favicon grabber: every icon file gets its own download button.

How to use Favicon Checker

  1. 1

    Enter a website

Type any domain, like example.com. We check its home page, because Google takes the favicon from there.

  2. 2

    We find every icon

We read the favicon tags, the Apple touch icon, the web app manifest and /favicon.ico, then open each file.

  3. 3

    Check Google's rules

See if the favicon is square, big enough, crawlable and loading, with a score and a fix for every problem.

  4. 4

    Preview and download

See it in Google, browser tabs and phone home screens, then download any icon file in one click.

Frequently asked questions

What does this favicon checker test?

It finds every icon your home page declares, opens each file and checks Google's favicon rules: a favicon tag on the home page, a square image of at least 48x48 pixels, a file that loads, and robots.txt access for Googlebot. It also checks the Apple touch icon, the web app manifest icons and /favicon.ico.

Why is my favicon not showing in Google?

The most common causes are a missing rel=icon tag on the home page, an icon that is not square or smaller than 48x48 pixels, a file that returns an error, or robots.txt blocking Googlebot-Image. Fix what the checker flags, then wait for Google to recrawl.

How long does Google take to show a new favicon?

Google recrawls favicons on its own schedule, so a change can take a few days to a few weeks to appear. You can speed it up by requesting indexing of your home page in Google Search Console.

Can I download a favicon from any website?

Yes. Enter the site and every icon file we find gets a Download button: the .ico, PNG and SVG favicons, the Apple touch icon and the app manifest icons.

Is this favicon checker free?

Yes, free with no signup. To keep it fast for everyone, each visitor gets a limited number of checks per hour.

What size should a favicon be?

Ship a 32x32 favicon.ico for browsers, an SVG icon for sharp tabs, a 180x180 Apple touch icon and 192x192 plus 512x512 icons in your web app manifest. For Google Search, the icon must be square and at least 48x48 pixels, ideally a multiple of 48.

Should my favicon be .ico, PNG or SVG?

Use all three. A favicon.ico at the site root for older browsers and tools, an SVG for crisp icons that can adapt to dark mode, and PNG files for the Apple touch icon and app icons. Google accepts any of these formats.

Why does Google show a different favicon than my site?

Google keeps a saved copy and refreshes it on its own schedule. The checker shows both: the icon your site serves now and Google's saved copy. If they differ, Google has not recrawled your favicon yet.

Does a favicon help SEO?

It does not change rankings directly, but it shows next to your result in Google. A clear, recognizable favicon makes your listing stand out and can lift click-through rate, especially on mobile.

Why is my favicon blurry?

The browser or phone is scaling up a file that is too small. Add files at the exact sizes in the size coverage chart, or use an SVG favicon, which stays sharp at any size.
