Sample report: a real check of Buffer, run on October 31, 2026. Yours appears here.

AI named Buffer in all 4 answers.

Small sample: 3 questions, 2 AI assistants, one run, answers from October 31, 2026. Answers change between runs, so treat this as a snapshot, not a ranking. Questions that name Buffer are not scored, because the answer has to mention you.

“The best choice depends on your workflow, but Buffer is the strongest default for most creators and small teams: it is simple, supports major networks, and has a useful free plan.”

Buffer comes near the top of this answer, 1st of 10 names we found.

Your site was cited: buffer.com.

Who AI named

Share of 6 answers that name each company.

Names are pulled from the answers by rules, not by a person, so a non-competitor can slip in.

What AI cited

buffer.com was cited 3 times out of 50 citations.

What to do next

  1. 1

    Test harder questions

Buffer was named in every scored answer. Edit the questions to ask about a narrower use case or a buyer who does not know you yet, then run it again.

  2. 2

    Get listed on zapier.com, technologyadvice.com and kontentino.com

These list and comparison pages were cited for your questions. A place on pages like these is the most direct way into the answer. Across our benchmark, listicles were 30% of cited sources.

  3. 3

Build on the pages AI already cites

buffer.com was cited 3 times for questions that do not name you. Keep those pages fresh and link to them from new content on the same topic, because they already earn trust.

  4. 4

Write "Later vs Buffer" and "Later alternatives"

Later was named in 6 answers, the most of any rival. Comparison pages let you show up when buyers ask about the names AI already trusts.

Outrank does this every day: it publishes articles on your site and builds the backlinks that make AI trust them.

What AI answers look like today

Before you run a check, here is what we found when we asked the four assistants 96 everyday questions and logged every source they cited. See the full benchmark.

What kind of page AI cites

74% of 2,671 cited sources were blog content.

The four AIs rarely agree

79% of 1,387 cited sites were cited by only one AI. No single page was cited by all four.

What is AI visibility?

AI visibility is how often AI assistants name your brand, and cite your site, when people ask questions about what you sell. You may also see it called LLM visibility or AI brand visibility. It is the result that generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO) try to improve.

5 facts from our benchmark

  1. Blog content made up 74% of the 2,671 sources four AI assistants cited across 96 questions.
  2. Listicles alone were 30% of cited sources, which is why "best X" pages decide who gets named.
  3. 99% of the blog posts cited sat on the company's own site, not on a blogging platform.
  4. 79% of cited sites were cited by only one AI, so being visible in one assistant says little about the others.
  5. The mix differs by assistant: blog content was 17% of ChatGPT's linked sources and 94% of Claude's.

How we check

Method reviewed on .

  • Three buyer questions

We build them from templates with no AI call: "best {category}", "{category} for small business" and "{brand} alternatives". You can edit all three before you run.

  • Real AI answers with web search on

Each question goes to the assistant through its API with web search turned on. Free runs use Perplexity Sonar and Gemini with Google Search. A free account adds ChatGPT and Claude.

  • What the score counts

The score is the number of answers that name you, out of the answers to questions that do not already name you. A failed answer is left out, not counted against you.

  • How a mention is detected

We match your brand name and your domain with fixed rules, no AI judge. "Outrank your rivals" is not a mention of Outrank, and "Dropbox" is not a mention of Box. Very short names only count when the domain is written out.

  • Cached for 3 days

Answers are stored for 3 days, so the same question gets the same answer during that time and a repeat check costs you nothing.

  • Limits

Three questions is a small sample. API answers can differ from the consumer apps, which also personalize, and answers change from day to day. Use this to spot a gap, not to measure a trend.

Questions people ask

What is an AI visibility checker?

It is a tool that asks AI assistants the questions your buyers ask, then reports whether your brand was named, in which sentence, who was named instead and which sources were cited. People also call this checking your LLM visibility or AI brand visibility.

Is this AI visibility tool free?

Yes. You get 2 checks a day on Perplexity and Gemini with no sign-up. A free account gives you 10 checks a day on all four assistants. Checks we already have answers for do not count.

Why are ChatGPT and Claude only in the sign-up version?

They cost us more per answer than Perplexity and Gemini, so we keep them for people with a free account. No credit card is needed.

Why is the "alternatives" question not in my score?

A question that contains your brand almost always gets an answer that repeats your brand. Counting it would inflate your score. We still run it because it shows which companies AI sees as your rivals.

Is this a GEO checker or an AEO checker?

Yes to both. Generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO) are two names for the same goal: being named and cited in AI answers. This tool checks that result for your brand. It does not audit your pages.

Does it work as an AI Overview checker?

Not directly. We do not read the AI Overview box on Google results. Gemini with Google Search is the closest signal we run, and it can give a different answer from the Overview.

How accurate is the result?

The sentences and sources are exactly what the assistant returned. The sample is small and AI answers change between runs, so one check is a snapshot. Competitor names are pulled by rules, so a non-competitor can slip into that chart.

Do you store what I type?

We store your brand, website, category and questions for 3 days so your result and its link keep working. Anyone with the link can see that result, so do not type anything private.

How do I get AI to name my brand?

Get onto the pages AI already cites and publish pages it can cite. In our benchmark 74% of cited sources were blog content and 30% were listicles. We make Outrank, which publishes that content on your site and builds backlinks every day.

Missing from the answers? Outrank fixes that.

We make Outrank, so we have a stake in this, but the checker runs the same way for every brand. Outrank publishes articles on your site every day and builds the backlinks that make AI trust them.
