AI citations200 sites · Ahrefs × Search Console
AI cites the sites Google already shows.
We matched 200 websites’ AI citations, measured by Ahrefs across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, with their own Search Console data, Domain Rating and backlinks. The pattern is a chain: backlinks build authority, authority earns Google visibility, and Google visibility is what assistants cite. Publishing volume multiplies the result.

Sites with 150+ verified backlinks sat at a median Domain Rating of 30; sites with fewer than 10 sat at 6 (correlation 0.55). Sites at DR 30+ were shown by Google 18× as often as sites under DR 10 (0.46). And how often Google shows a site predicts its AI citations better than anything else we measured (0.80).
That is why every assistant in this study behaves like a search engine with extra steps: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini run web searches before they answer, and AI Overviews and AI Mode sit on top of Google’s own index. To be quoted, you first have to be found, and to be found, you need authority.

The climb is steepest at the bottom. Sites at DR 10–19 had a median of 42 citations and nearly 50,000 Google impressions, against 3.5 citations and about 5,500 impressions under DR 10. On the backlink side, sites with 150+ verified links got a median of 98 citations against 6 for sites with fewer than 10: 16×. Customers like 24hourEDU (DR 1.2 to 30) and Moonb (DR 22 to 43) show the same climb on a single site.

Domain Rating and backlinks sit lower on this list for a simple reason: they act through Google. When we compare sites that Google already shows equally often, Domain Rating adds little on its own (partial correlation 0.12). Read that the right way round: authority does its work by earning the impressions in the first place. Remove it and the impressions, and the citations, never arrive.

Isolate each group and watch where it sits. The pink DR-under-10 dots crowd the bottom-left corner: little visibility, few citations. The dark DR 30+ dots climb to the top-right. Every group follows the same diagonal from visibility to citations; authority decides how far along it a site gets.

Among the most visible third, sites with 100+ articles collected 3.4× the citations of sites with fewer; in the middle third, 2.3×. More pages means more distinct answers for an assistant to retrieve. The median cited site has 2.5% of its Google-visible pages quoted somewhere, and you cannot predict which, so you need the rest too.

Perplexity cites sources on almost every answer, so it is where growing sites show up first. ChatGPT cites far less often per answer, but it still quoted 114 of the 200 sites. If you want to see your first AI citation, look at Perplexity and Copilot; if you want the biggest audience, the work is the same anyway.
Our take
AI citations are earned in two moves: build the authority that makes Google show you, then publish enough pages to be shown for every question your customers ask.
The industry is selling AI visibility as a brand-new discipline with brand-new tricks. Our data says it is the proven discipline with a new scoreboard: authority and coverage. Links make search engines trust you, pages give them something to show, and assistants quote what search engines show.
That is exactly the loop Outrank automates: a backlink network of verified, relevant links, an article a day on your own domain, and auto-publishing. See how it works on our AI visibility page.
- 01
Build real authority
Backlinks move Domain Rating (0.55), and DR 30+ sites get 29× the citations. Earn links from relevant sites, consistently.
- 02
Publish wide, not just deep
Clear the 50-page floor, then keep going. At the same visibility, 100+ articles meant up to 3.4× the citations.
- 03
Track impressions as your AI metric
Google impressions were the best predictor of citations we found. If they climb, assistants are finding you.
The case against
4 reasons to discount these numbers
Every dataset has blind spots. These are ours, stated plainly.
Correlation is not causation
Established sites have more of everything: links, authority, impressions, articles and citations. Grouping by impressions controls for size, but not for brand, niche or quality.
Links and articles travel together
In the Outrank exchange, sites that publish more also receive more links (correlation 0.79), so the two effects are hard to separate. Our customer case studies show the authority gains site by site.
One measurement of AI
Ahrefs tracks a large but fixed set of prompts and searches. A site can be cited for questions outside that set and never show up in these numbers.
A snapshot
Citations and Search Console data were pulled the same week. We do not yet know how fast citations follow authority and impressions over time.
Methodology
How we ran the numbers
- Sample: 200 websites drawn at random from Outrank customers with Search Console connected and at least 500 impressions in the last 28 days, 40 from each fifth of the traffic distribution so small and large sites are equally represented. Hosted subdomains (Framer, Webflow, Shopify and similar) were excluded.
- AI citations: Ahrefs, September 2026: total citation links and distinct cited pages across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Grok, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, all subdomains. 53,068 citations in total, median 43 per site; 17 sites had none.
- Site data: impressions, clicks and average position for the last 28 days and the number of pages with impressions over 16 months, from Search Console; Domain Rating, published articles and verified backlinks (links our crawler confirmed live) from Outrank.
- Statistics: Spearman rank correlations, which are robust to the huge spread between small and large sites. “At the same Google visibility” comparisons split the sample into thirds by impressions first.
