Methodology

How we built this page

  • Primary sources only: every number links to the organization that collected the data, not to another roundup.
  • Checked against the source: each figure was matched to the text of its source page on October 3, 2026. Numbers we could not find in the source were left out.
  • Recent first: 84% of these statistics were published in 2024 or later. Older figures stay only when they are still the most recent large study on the question, and each one shows its year.
  • Same meaning, plain words: statements are rewritten to stand alone, but keep the source’s population, period and unit.
  • Original data: the Outrank figures come from Search Console and platform data described in each linked study.
  • Updates: we refresh this page every quarter. Spotted an outdated or wrong number? Email support@outrank.so.

Blogging FAQ

Quick answers, with the numbers

How long does it take to write a blog post?
About 3 hours and 20 minutes on average, down from a peak of 4 hours 10 minutes in 2022, according to Orbit Media’s 2026 survey of 1,042 bloggers. AI is the main reason: the average content marketer now spends about 50 fewer hours a year writing.
How long should a blog post be?
The average blog post is 1,312 words (Orbit Media, 2026) and the average page-one Google result has 1,447 (Backlinko). Long posts earn more links: 3,000+ words get 77.2% more referring domains than posts under 1,000 words. But 53.4% of pages cited in Google AI Overviews are under 1,000 words (Ahrefs), so answer the question first and add length only where it helps.
How long does it take a new blog post to rank on Google?
Usually longer than a year. Only 1.74% of newly published pages reached Google’s top 10 within a year, and 72.9% of top-10 pages are more than three years old (Ahrefs, 2025). Across sites publishing daily with Outrank, median Google clicks were up 27% after three months and doubled around month seven.
How much money do bloggers make?
Most take a while to earn anything. In a survey of 187 bloggers, the median time to a first dollar was 12 months and to a full-time income 36 months, and bloggers needed 300+ posts on average to earn over $1,000 a month (Productive Blogging). Digital products earned an average RPM of $283.64 against $33.80 for display ads.
Is blogging still worth it in 2026?
For businesses, yes, but the bar is higher. Only 13.9% of bloggers report strong results (Orbit Media, 2026), yet 27% of marketers rank website, blog and SEO as their top ROI channel, the highest of any channel (HubSpot). Consistent publishing pays: 75.4% of the sites we studied that publish with Outrank gained Google clicks.
How much of the web is written by AI?
About half of new articles are now primarily AI-generated (Graphite, 2026), and 74.2% of new web pages contain some AI content (Ahrefs). At the top of Google, human writing still dominates: only 14% of ranking articles and 7% of #1 results are AI-generated (Graphite, 2025).
