Methodology

How we built this page

  • Primary sources only: every number links to the organization that collected the data, not to another roundup.
  • Checked against the source: each figure was matched to the text of its source page on October 3, 2026. Numbers we could not find in the source were left out.
  • Recent first: 95% of these statistics were published in 2024 or later. Older figures stay only when they are still the most recent large study on the question, and each one shows its year.
  • Same meaning, plain words: statements are rewritten to stand alone, but keep the source’s population, period and unit.
  • Original data: the Outrank figures come from Search Console and platform data described in each linked study.
  • Updates: we refresh this page every quarter. Spotted an outdated or wrong number? Email support@outrank.so.

Content marketing FAQ

Quick answers, with the numbers

How many marketers use AI for content?
Nearly all of them. 95% of B2B marketers say their organization uses AI applications, and 89% of those use it to create or optimize written content (Content Marketing Institute). In Ahrefs’ 2026 survey, 93% of marketers used AI to help create content, but only 2.7% trust AI content without a human review.
Which content formats perform best?
58% of B2B marketers rate video as their most effective content type (Content Marketing Institute). For search traffic, Outrank’s study of 6.2 million pages found free tools and calculators earn 2.11x the click-through rate of the same site’s articles, while “what is” pages earn about half.
How much do companies spend on content marketing?
Budgets vary widely, but they are rising. 79.2% of marketing teams expect their 2026 budget to grow (HubSpot), while 30% of B2B content marketers spend less than $5,000 a month (Siege Media). 73% of marketers say their budget gets more scrutiny than before.
How do you measure content marketing ROI?
With difficulty. Measuring the ROI of marketing is the most-cited challenge, named by 33% of marketers (HubSpot, 2026), and only 51% of B2B marketers who measure content performance think they do it well (Content Marketing Institute). Track pipeline and assisted conversions, plus impressions and AI citations, not clicks alone.
How is AI search changing content marketing?
It takes clicks and changes where research starts. Google users click a traditional result in 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without (Pew Research Center), and 51% of B2B software buyers now start research in an AI chatbot more often than Google (G2, 2026). Outrank’s 415-site panel saw median click-through fall 40% in ten months while impressions doubled.
Is content marketing still worth it in 2026?
For most teams, yes. 97% of content marketers say their program is successful to some degree and 27% call it very successful (Siege Media, 2026). Buyers decide early: 95% of the time the winning B2B vendor is already on the buyer’s Day One shortlist (6sense), and content is how you get on it.
