Methodology

How we built this page

  • Primary sources only: every number links to the organization that collected the data, not to another roundup.
  • Checked against the source: each figure was matched to the text of its source page on October 3, 2026. Numbers we could not find in the source were left out.
  • Recent first: 84% of these statistics were published in 2024 or later. Older figures stay only when they are still the most recent large study on the question, and each one shows its year.
  • Same meaning, plain words: statements are rewritten to stand alone, but keep the source’s population, period and unit.
  • Original data: the Outrank figures come from Search Console and platform data described in each linked study.
  • Updates: we refresh this page every quarter. Spotted an outdated or wrong number? Email support@outrank.so.

Link building FAQ

Quick answers, with the numbers

How much does a backlink cost in 2026?
It depends on how you get it. Across 52,671 publisher sites, the average guest post cost $459 and the average link insertion $225 (Adsy, 2026). BuzzStream found guest posts average $295 bought directly from a site and $461 through a vendor. SEO professionals put the acceptable price of one high-quality link at about $509 (Editorial.Link).
Do backlinks still matter for SEO?
Yes, though less than they used to. The #1 Google result has 3.8x more backlinks than results 2 to 10 (Backlinko), and 92.3% of new domains that held top-100 rankings for 13 months had at least one backlink (Semrush). Ahrefs measured link correlations with rankings at 0.22–0.24, down from up to 0.29 in an earlier study.
What is the most effective link building tactic?
Digital PR, according to the people doing the work. 48.6% of SEO professionals call it the most effective tactic (Editorial.Link), and 34% name it their best performer against 18% for guest posts (Reporter Outreach, 2026).
What is a good outreach reply rate?
Only 8.5% of link building outreach emails get a response (Backlinko, 12 million emails). Hunter measured a 4.5% average reply rate for cold email sequences and 13% for digital PR campaigns in 2025. One extra follow-up raised replies by 65.8% in Backlinko’s data.
Do backlinks help you get cited by ChatGPT and AI Overviews?
Mostly indirectly. Sites with over 32,000 referring domains are 3.5x more likely to be cited by ChatGPT than sites with up to 200 (SE Ranking), and in Outrank’s 200-site study, sites at DR 30+ got 29x the AI citations of sites under DR 10. Brand mentions correlate more strongly with AI Overview visibility (0.664) than backlink counts (0.218), according to Ahrefs.
How many backlinks disappear over time?
A lot. Ahrefs found 66.5% of the links pointing to over 2 million sites since 2013 had rotted, and Pew Research found 38% of webpages that existed in 2013 were gone a decade later.
