Change one word. Lose a spot in AI rankings

I asked Perplexity for the five best AI meeting note takers. It named Otter, Fireflies, Avoma, Fathom, Granola.
I changed one word - "best" to "shortlist". Fathom vanished. Sembly AI took its slot.
Same question. One word. A brand dropped.

A 2026 study found that tiny edits, like adding a question mark, reshuffled which sources Google's AI Overviews cited. Another study found that rephrasing a "which vendors should I shortlist" question changed about half the recommended brands.
Try it on your brand, free, in 2 minutes. Open ChatGPT or Perplexity logged out and ask your buyer question three ways:
  1. best [category] for [customer]
  1. which [category] should [customer] shortlist
  1. recommend the leading [category] for [customer]
If the names change, you don't have an AI ranking. You have a coin flip that lands differently depending on how the buyer phrases it.
Do not chase one phrasing. Buyers ask the same thing 5 ways, so you need to be the answer to all 5.
This week, do this:
  1. Run the 3-tab test on your top 3 buyer questions. Note which wordings you win and which you vanish from.
  1. For every wording you lose, improve the page to answer that exact question - a clear comparison, real numbers, your category and rivals named honestly. That is the page an AI engine can lift you from, whatever way the buyer types it.
Writing that page for every buyer question, in the shape engines cite, is the slow part. It is what we built Outrank for: answer-shaped articles, straight to your CMS.
